After many years on the mainland, Hein returns to his home – the only village on a remote island, shaped by the harsh tides of the North Sea. To his astonishment, however, the close-knit village community does not recognise him. Even his childhood friend Friedemann turns his back on him. To bring the truth to light, the community convenes a village court to determine whether Hein really is who he claims to be. But as the trial progresses, the contradictions mount. Kai Stänickes filmdebut is an intimate exploration of identity and belonging.

KAI STÄNICKE (*1986 in Werdohl) hat Filmwissenschaft studiert und absolvierte anschließend ein Praktikum im Bereich Produktionsmanagement bei X Filme Creative Pool in Berlin. Danach arbeitete er zunächst als Regieassistent und realisierte dann eigene Kurzfilme, die u.a. von Saatchi & Saatchi, Berlinale Talents und Nespresso Talents ausgezeichnet wurden. Mit „Der Heimatlose“ gibt er sein Spielfilmdebüt.
