For the past ten years, Norwegian director Asgeir Helgestad has been documenting the extraordinary life of a female polar bear named Frost – a mother fighting for the survival of her cubs in a rapidly changing Arctic. What begins as pure observation develops into an intimate journey full of closeness and distance, of survival and affection, conflict and loss – transforming the filmmaker from a silent observer into a committed storyteller. The film explores the relationship between humans and animals in an extreme ecosystem undergoing change. Told as a personal narrative, the documentary invites viewers to experience a deep connection with a creature that is both alien and familiar to us. The encounter between Frost and Asgeir offers moving insights into themes such as motherhood, aging, connection, loss and resilience.

ASGEIR HELGESTAD ist ein Filmemacher mit über dreißig Jahren Dreherfahrung in der Arktis – er gilt als Norwegens meist ausgezeichneter Natur- und Tierfilmer. Seine Leidenschaft für das perfekte Bild, verbunden mit einem tiefen Einfühlungsvermögen für seine Motive, spiegelt sich in seinen Werken wider. Sein Dokumentarfilm „Queen without Land“ (2018) wurde weltweit auf mehr als 50 Festivals gezeigt und mehrfach ausgezeichnet. „A Call from the Wild“ (2024) lief ebenfalls erfolgreich auf Festivals weltweit, der Film hat darüber hinaus zu einem starken Umweltengagement in Norwegen beigetragen.
