Amanda and her stepfather Martin face a moral dilemma that is increasingly driving a wedge between them: has Amanda’s mother Leslie, who suffers from advanced dementia, lost the ability to make decisions in her own best interests? And if so – who is allowed and obliged to make these decisions? Partner, child or institution? As Amanda and Martin try to find answers, the consequences spiral further and further out of control. ”Queen at Sea” shows just how fine the line between care and paternalism can be, without passing hasty judgements. Director Hammer allows for different perspectives whilst at the same time making it clear just how challenging and often bleak everyday life in care homes can be. This is counterbalanced by the closeness and dignity that arise from personal attention. A deeply moving film about a subject that will affect us all sooner or later.

LANCE HAMMER studierte Architektur an der University of Southern California. Sein erster Film „Ballast“ lief 2008 im Wettbewerb der Berlinale und gewann den US Dramatic Directing Award auf dem Sundance Film Festival. Der Film lief weltweit auf Festivals und wurde mehrfach ausgezeichnet, u.a. als bester Film und für die beste Regie. Zudem erhielt er vier FIPRESCI-Preise. „Queen at Sea“ ist sein zweiter Spielfilm. Der Filmemacher lebt und arbeitet in Los Angeles.
