Are there parallels between the ageing process of cheese and the human experience of growing older? In his documentary, director Ian Cheney takes us on a journey to distant, unexpected places – from Japan to Tbilisi. The focus is on the diverse range of people we encounter along the way: passionate cheese makers, cheese merchants and knowledgeable librarians, whose perspectives on decay and dissolution are both captivating and thought-provoking. ”Shelf Life” is a captivating experience that is both culinary and philosophical. Through striking imagery and a calm narrative style, filmmaker Ian Cheney delves ever deeper into the world of cheese-making – and in doing so explores a very human theme: the complexity of ageing. ”Shelf Life” unfolds a quiet, poetic power and invites us to rethink time, transience and growing older.
