Set against the breathtaking landscapes of Sápmi, reindeer herder Maia fights to protect her ancestors’ land from a looming mining project. As the protests grow increasingly fierce, she seeks support from her charismatic uncle Lemme – whose presence brings old, deeply buried traumas back to the surface. Maia faces an impossible choice: to defend the land at the expense of her family, or to give it up in order to break a painful silence. Just like her protagonist, filmmaker Elle Sofe Sara belongs to the Sámi minority. In ”Árru”, the choreographer and performance artist – well-known in Norway – unfolds a courageous musical drama that explores difficult taboo subjects through song, joik and dance.
