Director Teodora Ana Mihai delivers a gripping and moving cinematic interpretation of the tragic events of 29 May 1985 at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels. Although these events took place more than forty years ago, the underlying mechanisms – political and personal responsibility, the fear of escalation, and the temptation to maintain appearances – remain alarmingly relevant today. The questions raised by the tragedy and the debates it continues to spark today seem particularly pressing in light of current social and geopolitical tensions.

TEODORA ANA MIHAI ist eine in Bukarest geborene belgisch-rumänische Regisseurin. Internationale Beachtung erlangte sie mit ihrem Dokumentarfilm „Waiting for August“ (2014), der über zehn Preise gewann und für den EFA-Preis nominiert wurde. Ihr erster Spielfilm „La Civil“ (2021), der im Rahmen der Cinéfondation in Cannes entwickelt und von den Brüdern Dardenne sowie Cristian Mungiu koproduziert wurde, gewann den Prix de l’Audace in der Sektion „Un Certain Regard“ in Cannes. Ihr zweiter Spielfilm „Traffic“ (2024) gewann den Grand Prix in Warschau und war Rumäniens Oscar-Beitrag für 2026. „Heysel 85“ ist ihr dritter Spielfilm.
