Student Andrea is an aspiring writer. She works part-time in a café, but dreams of earning more than the minimum wage. A chance visit to a strip club opens up new possibilities: under the pseudonym Mary Ann, she begins working for an escort agency. As a sex worker, Andrea quickly earns a lot of money – but the price she pays is high. After graduating, she moves to a farm with her boyfriend Oliver and leaves her old life behind. She tries out various jobs, but none meet her expectations. In search of independence, flexibility and better earning potential, Andrea eventually returns to the sex industry as Sophia. She loves the gigs, her colleagues and, above all, the money – but the risks remain. This hybrid documentary is based on Andrea Werhun’s 2018 memoir of the same name and portrays her time as a sex worker. Alongside her, friends from the industry, her strict Catholic mother, her long-term partner Oliver and her regular client Ron also have their say.

NICOLE BAZUIN ist eine Filmemacherin und Künstlerin aus Toronto. Ihr Kurzfilm „Thriving: A Dissociated Reverie“ feierte auf dem Sundance Film Festival Premiere und wurde in die „Canada’s Top Ten“-Liste des TIFF für 2023 aufgenommen. Sie war Mitgestalterin und Regisseurin der Serien „This Art Works!“ für CBC Arts und „Climate Talks With Kids“ für The Image Centre. Zudem hat sie als Fotografin an Andrea Werhuns Buch „Modern Whore: A Memoir“ mitgearbeitet. „Modern Whore“ ist ihr erster Langfilm.
