Moses lives in a remote community in Newfoundland. When the government decides to evacuate and destroy the community to make way for a dam project, Moses refuses to leave his home. He battles against bureaucracy and the forces trying to take away his land. But he also has to defend himself against his own neighbors, who try to force him to give up. Meanwhile, he develops an unexpected relationship with the young Alicia. „Sweetland,“ based on a book by Canadian author Michael Crummey, is a touching tale of perseverance, love, and the struggle against the challenges of a changing world.

CHRISTIAN SPARKES ist ein kanadischer Filmregisseur und Drehbuchautor aus St. John‘s, Neufundland Labrador. Als Absolvent des Canadian Film Centre führte er Regie bei mehreren Kurzfilmen, bevor er 2014 mit „Cast No Shadow“ sein Spielfilmdebüt gab, für das er für den Canadian Screen Award nominiert wurde. „The King Tide“ ist sein dritter Spielfilm, der seine Premiere auf dem Toronto International Film Festival 2023 feierte. „Sweetland“ ist sein vierter Spielfilm, der seine Premiere auf dem Atlantic International Film Festival 2023 in Halifax hatte.
